Here is the biggest tip when hiring entertainment for a corporate event, private party, birthday, anniversary etc…………………………….ask the entertainer if they offer a guarantee.

A guarantee will significantly reduce your stress and worry. You’d be surprised how many entertainers don’t offer one. If they don’t offer one, look for an entertainer that does. I’ve offered a guarantee for 15 years that if the client or any of their guests weren’t thrilled with my services, they didn’t owe me a penny. I’ve never had a client take me up on my guarantee.

Wedding Cocktail Hour Entertainment

How many weddings have you attended that during the cocktail hour there isn’t anything to do except drink? There is a growing trend to provide interactive entertainment during wedding cocktail hours. Type of entertainment is a great ice breaker and gets people socializing. Of course there is the standard type of entertainment that everyone has seen before, namely magicians and caricature artists. That is fun entertainment but the emphasis is on the performer and not the guest.

Pucker up octopus!

The dictionary defines “kiss” as “to touch or caress with the lips as an expression of affection, greeting, respect, or amorousness.” Yes, I know. That definition is…stale, isn’t it? The world would be such a dreadful place if that definition summed up our feelings on kissing. Luckily, that is not the case. If, however, you are unimpressed by lip locking, this story may change your opinion. Scientists are in the process of unveiling an octopus that…kisses.

In the article, “Rare kissing octopus unveiled for the first time,” Tia Ghose of LiveScience writes, “Unlike other octopuses, where females have a nasty habit of eating their partners during sex, Larger Pacific Striped Octopuses mate by pressing their beaks and suckers against each other in an intimate embrace.” This is rare. Octopuses tend to be more brutal during the intimate times. Females eat their partners! This display of cephalopod affection has scientists intrigued. Richard Ross, a biologist at the California Academy of Sciences, says, “Its beauty, unique mating technique and social habits are intriguing the cephalopod community.” Such a discovery will surely change how we view octopuses and kissing as well.

The octopus itself is recent, discovered in 1991. The female sea dweller went on display on March 6 at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. A male will soon join it. If lucky, onlookers may witness an octopus make out session.

While unique in the cephalopod community, kissing is quite common among men and women. Is it so common that it has lost meaning for some? Possibly – in some people’s eyes, all lips are the same and intimacy overrated. How wrong they are! Each pair of lips is unique. Each has a personality. Since each pair of lips is unique, intimacy therefore is unique. Just look at some lip prints! The Larger Pacific Striped Octopuses seem to get it. Do you?

Lip Print Shapes

Lip prints come in many sizes and shapes. Take a moment and create your lip print on a piece of paper. Is your lip print round or oval or is it shaped like a diamond, triangle, or rectangle? Therse are the most common lip print shapes.

The round or oval shape is the harmony lip print. These people like everyone to get along. They don't care for conflict or confrontation and are known for giving others a pat on the back for doing a good job.

The diamond shape print indicates a successful person (at home or work). These people make good mentors and enjoy giving back to the community.

Triangle shaped lip prints belong to someone that is a "pointer". These individuals point others in the direction that will assist them in achieving their dreams and goals. Pointers work behind the scenes. Examples include teachers, coaches, counselors etc.

Lastly, the rectangular lip print is a godmother/godfather lip print. These people are well grounded in their beliefs and others come to them for guidance, direction, and clarity.

Combining the shape of a person's lip print with the size, intensity, fullness, as well as the corners and special traits will create a memorable and surprisingly accurate description of an individual.

Ice Breakers

Have you ever attended an event where everyone stands around and doesn't interact? Well, here a few ideas that will help break the ice at the next event you plan....

M & M Fun: pass around a large bowl of M & M's and ask everyone to take as many as they want but not to eat them yet. Once everyone has their M & M's, inform them that for every candy they took, they have to tell the group something about themselves. The more M & M's a guest takes, the more fun.
The Lineup: ask your guests to line up according to a certain criteria. Here are some examples, shoe size, birthday, number of books they read a year, how much they would have to be paid to eat a live worm, etc.
Straight Face Liar: each person receives a blank index card and is asked to write three statements about themselves - one true and two false. Each person reads their statements out loud and the other guests try to guess which statement is true. The object is to fool the other guests with their statements.

February 26th is National Pistachio Day! The nuts grow on small bushy trees native to the Middle East. Pistachios grow in bunches similar to grapes. Humans have been eating pistachios for more than 9,000 years. They are know as the "smiling nut" in Iran and "the happy nut" in China. It is only one of two nuts mentioned in the Bible.

The History of Lipstick

Lipstick is an essential for most women. It comes in a rainbow of shades and colors. Lip color has been around for over 5,000 years. Early lipstick was created by crushing semi-precious stones and applying them to the lips. Ancient Egyptian women used iodine to color their lips a bluish purple with severe health consequences.

In 1770 the British government passed a law that stated a marriage should be annulled if the woman wore cosmetics before her wedding day. In the 1800's wearing red lipstick indicated that you were "a loose woman". During the 1920's Flappers wore red lipstick to demonstrate their independence and in the 1930's Elizabeth Arden introduced a variety of lipstick colors.

A long lasting lipstick was developed by Hazel Bishop in 1949. After WW II, brightly colored lips became popular due to the influence of Lana Turner and Rita Hayworth. The first lipstick tubes were created in 1957. Prior to that, women had to brush the color on like paint. After Marilyn Monroe's "Some Like it Hot" in 1959 most women were wearing bright lipstick. White lipstick was popular in the 1960's due to a number of rock groups such as the Shirelles and the Ronettes.

In 1975, fuscia gloss was popular due to the glowing quality on the disco dance floor. Black lipstick became in vogue during the 1970's to 1990's with the punk and goth subcultures. Mood lipstick appeared in the 1980's. The color changed once it was applied to the lips.

Gwyneth Paltrow sums up today's lipstick trend, "Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick."

Breaking the kissing record

It is a busy week for lips; they work overtime this time of the year. Valentine’s Day is this Thursday, and couples all across the nation will go out to eat and enjoy a nice night on the town. Well – maybe not that nice; oftentimes Cupid’s holiday brings out the worst in people. However, we cannot say the same of nine Thai couples.

In the article, “9 Thai couples lock lips for ‘kiss in’ to break 50-hour world record,” Agence France-Presse of The Raw Story writes, “Nine Thai couples locked lips Tuesday in hope of setting a new record for the world’s longest kiss.” To break the record and enter the Guinness World Records, one couple must kiss for more than 50 hours, 25 minutes and one second.” That is a long time to think. My lips are sore just thinking about it. Couples of all ages are participating in the event, including a 74-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman celebrating their 50^th wedding anniversary. Although they lasted for only an hour, their attempt was not only admirable, it was also endearing. It is nice to see an older couple still locking lips. See, true love can last! I wonder what their lip prints would reveal…

In other lip-related news – earlier this week, 3.1 Phillip Lim revealed his fall 2013 collection. Lips are the central focus. Regarding the show, NARS makeup artist Francelle Daly said, “I wanted to do the natural essence of the girl. And what that means translating to the makeup is she’s an uptown sophisticated girl, she still spends some time doing her makeup in the morning – but she has an edge.” The color of the lipstick and shape of the lips can give someone that “edge.” Looking at a woman’s lips, you can tell if she is an uptown girl or a downtown rocker, and that is just because of the lipstick color or, as the Huffington Post put it, “The central part of the look, however, was the deep, moody lip.” Now imagine what a lip print reading may reveal. It could be startling, but it will always be fun and spot-on.

Whether you associate lips with kissing or a fashion collection, it is clear that lips reveal a great deal about someone. You can gauge someone’s fire. Do they burn with passion? If so, chances are he or she lives a passionate life. Does the woman you are dating have deep and moody lips? Perhaps she rocks out on the weekends, as the Phillip Lim fall 2013 collection seems to suggest. Lips can teach you a lot. It is about time you dig a little deeper and see what’s buried deep within your lips. Could be treasure, could be…
